16 Nov SpeakerBox Attends WWPR 2015 Woman Of the Year Awards
Last week the SpeakerBox team attended the Washington Women in Public Relations (WWPR) Woman of the Year Awards Luncheon at The Fairmont Hotel in DC. This event recognizes three of DC’s most talented women in PR and we’re honored to share that our own Lisa Throckmorton was a finalist!
The WWPR Woman of the Year Award was founded in 1990 to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women who have made a lasting impact in their profession. Nominees were judged on their demonstrated ability and leadership skills, their contributions to their community, and their history of leadership in the PR industry.
This was my first experience at a WWPR event and it was truly inspiring. The venue was packed with women (and quite a few men, thanks Brandan and Josh!) who are leaders in our industry and dedicated to supporting each other.
WWPR lined up an incredible keynote speaker for the event, Kelly Parisi, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Lean In.
During her keynote Kelly shared a bit about her background and how her passion for feminism and equality got her out of the mailroom during her first internship and into a role where she had the opportunity to learn from Susan Kennedy, a PR and communications giant who taught her that PR is power. Kelly talked about her job now and how she got the courage to move her family across the country for it. She considered one of Sheryl Sandberg’s famous lines, “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” and challenged the audience to do the same.
Kelly reminded us that the 2015 nominees have been incredibly brave and triumphant throughout their careers and that each of them is someone worth emulating. The 2015 finalists included:
- Carrie Fox, President, C. Fox Communications
- Christina Nicols, Senior Vice President, Director of Strategic Planning and Research, Hager Sharp
- Lisa Throckmorton, Chief Operations Officer, SpeakerBox Communications
Congratulations to each of these outstanding finalists, especially to Christina Nichols who received the 2015 Woman of the Year award!
Lisa, the SpeakerBox team is beyond proud of all of the work you’ve done both in and out of the office. Thank you for consistently inspiring us, challenging us, and supporting us! We were all honored to attend the event and glad to be the loudest cheering section as you were recognized for all of your hard work.
PS: Later that evening a few of our team members went to NYC for the Stevie Awards, see what we came home with in Katie Hanusik’s blog post.
