29 May 1776 Names Challenge Cup Grand Champion
You have probably read quite a bit about 1776’s Challenge Festival on this blog – and hopefully you had the chance to attend the events a few weeks back! We previously wrote about the elite eight on this blog, so instead of keeping you in the dark, I wanted to spread the news about the startup that took home the final prize.
After seven months of searching, reading applications and hosting competitions, a winner was selected at the Challenge Cup Global Finals, which took place on the evening of May 17. Throughout the week leading up to the finals the competition was whittled down from 64 startups from around the world to just eight competitors – two in each category.
And now for the moment you have been waiting for, the winner is…
HandUp is a San Francisco-based startup that participated in the Smart Cities category of the competition. HandUp is a direct donation system for the homeless and others in need in a given neighborhood. With HandUp, users can donate to a specific person via their web profile or SMS, learn about their story and needs and hear updates on their progress. HandUp’s model ensures that 100 percent of the funds go toward basics like food, housing and medical care.
HandUp walked away from the competition with a $150,000 investment and the full support of 1776 and partners.
In addition to the grand champion, Challenge Cup also named winners for each of the categories. Those winners included: EduCanon in the Education category; PlugSurfing in the Energy category; and CancerIQ in the Health category.
Overall, the Challenge Festival was a fantastic week filled with great competitions, speakers, events and galas. If you missed out on any of the action, daily recaps from the panels and competitions can be found here: http://challengecup.1776dc.com/news/
We look forward to next year’s event and another great crop of startups!
